Battle the Bulge with Weight Loss Surgery | Northern Virginia

If you are considering weight loss surgery, Northern Virginia Surgical Specialists offer a variety of surgical options depending on your individual needs.

So, how do you know what type of surgery is best for you? Below are three of the most common surgery options.

Who Is Eligible for Weight Loss Surgery?

Bariatric surgery is not for everyone.

In fact, you must fall into one of the categories below in order to be eligible for weight loss surgery:

  • You have a BMI of 40 or more.

  • You are between the ages of 35 and 40 with a secondary condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease.

  • You are between the ages of 30 and 35 and have uncontrolled diabetes.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

This commonly performed weight loss surgery disconnects the top part of your stomach in order to create a small pouch.

Your small intestine is then re-rerouted to this pouch bypassing your stomach.

This is an ideal surgical option for patients with severe reflux disease, diabetes, or for individuals with a high BMI who need to lose more weight.

Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery

During sleeve gastrectomy surgery, your surgeon will remove about 80 to 85% of your stomach and replace it with a “sleeve.”

This is considered to be safer than gastric bypass and presents a low complication risk.

Sleeve gastrectomy surgery is ideal for patients who have undergone many stomach surgeries, for those who are over 500 pounds, who rely on many medications or for “high risk” patients.

Duodenal Switch

In a duodenal switch surgery, your surgeon removes part of your stomach and inserts a sleeve before performing an extensive bypass surgery.

There is a higher risk of complications with this weight loss surgery options but can result in extreme weight loss.

Patients who are severely obese, or who have a metabolic disease and are compliant in following the doctors’ orders are good candidates for a duodenal switch.
