bariatric surgery costs

Does Insurance Cover Bariatric Surgery?

More and more insurances are providing bariatric surgery coverage, given the enormous health benefit to the patient.  This includes both Medicaid and Medicare.  Bariatric surgery is one of the most common metabolic surgical procedures, addressing weight-related disorders for over 200,000 individuals every year.  We strongly encourage you to call your insurance company to ask about your benefits, as each individual plan can vary in coverage.

What Is the Average Out of Pocket Cost of Bariatric Surgery?

The costs of bariatric surgery vary depending upon the medical facility, the type of procedure, and the coverage options offered by your insurance, if any. We have partnered with our affiliate hospital to provide our patients with some of the most affordable costs in the region.  Out of pocket expenses for the sleeve gastrectomy will range from $7,000-$13,000, while a gastric bypass will range from $10,000-$15,0000, depending upon the need for joint procedures, whether you are a candidate for outpatient surgery, etc. These costs are all-inclusive, meaning the surgeon fee, anesthesia fee, hospital fee, and program fees.  Finally, revision bariatric surgery costs can range from $9,000-$15,000, depending upon the procedure.

Is Bariatric Surgery Financing Available?

Dr. Zubowicz understands how beneficial bariatric surgery is to our patients and works to make it affordable to as many people as possible.  Many insurance companies do cover the full cost of bariatric surgery.  However, for those who do not have bariatric coverage and have to pay out of pocket, UVA Community Health does have financial assistance available.  We work hard to provide options so that financial concerns do not hold you back from receiving the medical treatment you need and deserve.
